Funny thing is that my PC boots normally after I disconnect one or more hard drives. I'll have a look again at the AUTORUNS and Services but I suspect that as it is a fresh install with no programs added that this won't fix the issue. I was getting either a flickering(unusable) or completely black screen, on RDP or directly on the console of the 2012 R2 server.

Having read through this forum, I came across the option to delete the key (in Safe Mode) HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell then recreate the Shell key as a REG_SZ key with the value repairing the activation has always fixed it, now this is a totally black screen with nothing else on it but a moving cursor. Irv S. X64. But normally, a machine that has a failed activation will have a totally black wallpaper, usually accompanied with a "not activated" notice on the lower right corner. I have tried doing restarts and fully turning the computer off, nothing seems to work.

Problem started occurring after some Windows updates (don't know which one exactly). The hidden icons are word files and desktop.ini It's a laptop first i did not realize this. Fix: Restart whatever machine you've got mapped to your machine, or turn it off, it's gotta need some repair. All of this started after mapping network drives.
