I was given a Dell Inspiron 1150 that only had a fully charged battery, no power supply for hooking it to the wall or charging the battery. I found out that once I got in, I could go to set up and set the speed control to disabled, then it would work off the power adapter. This housing is physically connected to the MoBo via 4 or 6 (I forgot) pins that protude through it, to the back side. It's a funny name. http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/54138/

The last time it worked (a couple years ago) it was left on all night without the power cord in and when I turned it back on it wouldn't turn on; find more I soldered a wire to the ground pins on the bottom of the motherboard and then I soldered another wire to the positive pins.
