I was able to get into a routine of a few hours in the freezer to about 30 minutes of usage until I got almost all of my 300gb of files If the drive motor slows, or you have a power brown out, the heads can hit the platter, causing a "head crash". Exclamation points in device manager, or unrecognized usb device...computer freezing until the device is disconnected.
Of course this means $1,000-$2,500 at a data recovery place. by R. will leave it there for 12 hours. You said the whole computer is freezing when you plug it into the USB?
There is still hope however. TweakUI did have the drive unchecked. Is it a true external drive or just some IDE internal drive that you have connected to a USB bay or adapter? although i have another hard disk coming in mail. FInally I even uninstalled my hard and mass storage device from device manager just to see if it helps. You could probably get away with leaving it in for a shorter time frame but this is usually how long I leave it in for. It doesn't show in the disk management tool. I accidentally unplugged it without ejecting properly from my Mac Pro. Than I used this frozen hard drive as an external drive to recover data from it to my new already installed drive in the computer.
