Is there some magic in the drive logic that attempts a repair when its powered on but not accessed for 20 minutes? BTW, I just tried booting into safe mode and low res video mode and none of them worked, still the black screen problem. Well, I couldn't save any data, but it managed to save the disk so I was happy with the outcome. Seems like about every 8 to 14 months they hit their read/write limit and that's it. Then every time I rebooted my PC the same thing would happen, black screens, no input response, reboot would fix it.
It reports ok in the Magician software, but still....symptoms are very similar. But deciding to back up your files is only part of the process. If you restart your PC, the drive still won't reappear - the PC has to be cold-booted (powered down and restarted) for the drive to appear.
